Description
“Seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care” was the slogan (dating back to 1854) associated with the Manly Ferry service from Sydney, Circular Quay.
Fronting the northern end of Sydney Harbour and adjoining the Pacific Ocean a narrow spit of land, Manly has developed from a resort suburb to a beachside suburban paradise.
Standing at the gateway to Sydney Harbour, Manly doubles its population in summer due to its mild climate and the popularity of the eighteen harbour and ocean beaches nearby to the north.
On the harbour side, Manly boasts Sydney’s first regional art gallery and museum, beside Manly Oceanarium where visitors can walk under the ocean to view the amazing marine life. Captain Phillip (later to become Governor Phillip) who, in 1788 declared Sydney Harbour ‘the finest harbour in the world’, gave Manly its name after the manly behaviour of the aborigines living there.
