We passed through extraordinary shaped stones in the Davenport Range. The country was of granite formation and many of these stones were rounded like marbles. In fact they were called Devils Marbles, – this quote by John Lewis, during construction on the Overland Telegraph Line in 1872, is the first known record of the name.

Eerily scattered across a wide, shallow valley are heaps of these gigantic marbles, often precariously balanced on top of each other.

The Devils Marbles are located approximately 393 km north of Alice Springs and span the Stuart Highway. The nearest settlement is Wauchope, 9 km to the south.

In Aboriginal folklore, these rounded stones are the eggs of the powerful Rainbow Serpent.
